Hobbies as an Adult

alt text In modern society, making something is solely associated with work. We spend all this time doing this for others, and then when it comes time to make things for ourself... we can't. Are hobbies really dead?

Where do we learn to hobby?

Lets take a step back to childhood to look at how we percieve hobbies. these are normally; music, sport, language, engineering etc. Parents normally try to give their children hobbies which they also enjoy, and something they can help build bonds together. For example play a game of soccer together, or play some music as a home band. etc.

What makes a good hobby?

I think personally, having a hobby is more than just doing a task. It is something which you spend time thinking, or making something of your own creation outside of the action of doing.

Some people might say watching TV is a hobby? I can see where you are coming from however I think purely consuming is not a hobby. It tickles the back part of the brain which enjoys mystery, or something horrific, or something funny. But doesnt impact your life in any really meaningful was unless you associate with the concepts being shown. Why is this the case?

Do hobbies need to be obsessive?

I dont think so, however I have found getting fully stuck into a hobby is a great way to have life fulfillment. It is something outside of work you look forward to. Something entirely different which you can put yourself out there.
